Employment issues
for the new millennium: Challenges for battered women.
Ragin, D.F., Morrison, S.M., Griffing, S., Sage, R.E.,
Madry, L. & Bingham, L.E.
(August, 2000).
Battered women who leave their abusers are ill-prepared
for the workforce. Employed women often report being forced
to resign or being terminated due to excessive tardiness
or absenteeism as a result of the abuse. Others, succumbing
to the constant verbal denigration from the abuser, do
not seek work. This presentation examines the problems
that battered women confront in their efforts to become
economically self-sufficient. It identifies employment-related
services needed and outlines the collaboration required
between employers and social service agencies to mitigate
the impact of psychological barriers to long-term employment.
