The intergenerational impact of domestic violence
on society.
Ragin, D.F., Morrison, S.M., Griffing, S., Sage, R.E.,
Madry, L. & Bingham, L.E.
(August 2000).
This study examines the impact of domestic abuse over
three generations. Results from a sample of over 100 battered
African, African American, Asian and Latina women show
that 53% of the women seeking emergency shelter from partner/spouse
abuse had been abused during childhood. Battered women
who witnessed domestic violence during childhood were
more likely to be victims of sexual abuse than those without
such experience. Additionally, 75% of all shelter residents
reported that their children witnessed at least one episode
of domestic abuse. The implications of these findings
on the community will be discussed. |
